As always, my ideas are firing off, but I’m running behind. I had just finished celebrating Candlemas when—boom—I got kidnapped to party for Carnival. And holy hot sauce, it’s not just another holiday, I swear!
Alright, sit down, grab a ladle of batter, and let Dr. HotSauce explain it to you, sweet sauce style:
- Candlemas is a traditional and religious holiday that falls on February 2nd, exactly 40 days after Christmas. Originally, it’s the festival of candles (hence the name) and it symbolizes light, purification, and all that Christian jazz.
BUT WHAT REALLY MATTERS is that this holiday has become the national excuse to make crêpes!
Why crêpes?
Because their golden round shape looks like the sun returning after winter. A symbol of fertility, prosperity, and light.
BUT BUT BUT… Mardi Gras and Carnival aren’t exactly the same thing, but they go together like two sauces in a well-wrapped burrito. Let me explain:
Carnival is the whole festive season leading up to Lent (40 days before Easter). It usually starts around Epiphany (early January) and lasts several weeks, with parades, dancing, masks, confetti… and endless feasting!
Mardi Gras is the final day of Carnival. The grand finale! Just before Ash Wednesday, which kicks off Lent for the Catholics. It’s all about crêpes, donuts, and greasy delights — because after that, it’s supposed to be abstinence and boring soups until Easter.
But since I’m a nice guy, I’m bringing you my Duo Sugar Samba (I almost called it Sugar Daddy ).
A wild treat for pancakes, donuts, morning toast, roast duck, chicken, tea or even cappuccino.
The names? Chilli Caramel and Scorch Chilli Chocolat.
Finally, sweet treats your teen won’t secretly steal and leave you with an empty jar.
Or… will they?
